Abstract

We present analytical and experimental results of an antireflection coating for biological tissues at 60 GHz. The analytical study estimates the improvement in the transmitted power when perfect impedance matching is achieved by placing a metamaterial film in front of skin tissue. The estimated improvement is up to 4 dB. We subsequently present results from an animal trial where we demonstrate 1.9 dB improvement in the transmission through a 2.7 mm thick pig's ear that was sandwiched between patch antennas. To the best of our knowledge this is the first demonstration of a metamaterial antireflection coating for lossy biological tissues at this frequency range.
